Collagen Induction Therapy

What is Skin Needling with Dermapen?

DermaPen is a registered trademarked device used for a procedure called skin needling. Skin needling was originally developed by plastic surgeons and dermatologists as a non-surgical method for tissue rejuvenation.  Dermapen  unlike earlier roller appliances, uses a sterile, one-use-only pen-like device with adjustable fine surgical steel microneedles ranging from 0.25 mm to 2.5 mm in length. These microneedles penetrate the upper (epidermis) and lower (dermis) strata of the skin at targeted and specific depth, causing controlled microscopic wounds and pin point bleeding. This process elicits the body’s own wound healing response, which results in the release of cellular messengers that in turn increase fibroblast (collagen producing cells) activity.

The objective of collagen induction therapy (CIT) is to build up the connective tissue in the lower skin layers (dermal layers) while keeping intact the protective layers of the skin (epidermal layers).  We use the Dermapen to penetrate into the skin and break up old collagen strands and stimulate the production of elastin fibers oriented from the deep layers of the dermis to the surface. The result is smoother, thicker, tighter, more even toned skin  The problem with lasers and aggressive chemical peels is that the dermis is an extremely complex, highly specialized organ.  It may only be 0.2 mm thick but it is our only protection from the environment.  We should never damage the epidermis unless the risk of leaving the epidermis intact is greater than the risk of removing it.  Whatever we do, we should try to ensure that the basic architecture of the skin is not altered.  To rejuvenate skin and look young, we need a perfect epidermis with natural dermal papillae, good hydration, normal color and normal resilience.  When we have aggressive laser treatments and chemicals peels, over time we thin our epidermis and decrease our dermal papillae which results in inflamed, drier and more wrinkled skin.

The phases of skin remodeling are:

  1. Inflammation - Begins after injury
  2. Inflammatory Response - Tissue proliferation and growth factors stimulate healthy tissue formation
  3. Tissue Formation - Actual remodeling of skin tissue continues up to 1-year

CIT is the only skin rejuvenation treatment to target and regulate 3 key skin cells (keratinocyte, melanocyte and fibroblast) without compromising the integrity of the epidermis.

The growth factors released through CIT results in regenerative healing (collagen forms from the base upwards) and is type III collagen or healthy collagen.

What is Dermapen used to treat?

  • Wrinkling and fine lines
  • increase in collagen
  • Acne scarring
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Follicular scarring (‘enlarged pores’)
  • Skin rejuvenation - anti ageing
  • Surgical scars on the face and body
  • Large scars such as C-Section scars
  • Accidental and traumatic scars

How many treatments will I need and how often?

At MadisonAve Hair Skin Wellbeing Clinic your skin therapist will discuss the approximate number and frequency of treatments you may need in your initial complimentary consultation.
Generally, patients will need more than one treatment to achieve a satisfactory result. Results will also depend on the extent of pre-treatment collagen deficit in the tissue and collagen-degrading lifestyle factors  such as smoking, poor diet, sun exposure.

Treatments are normally spaced 4-6 weeks apart, depending on the condition being treated and the patient’s healing ability.
As general guide, a series of 4-8 treatments is recommended.

What level of discomfort is expected with this treatment?

Prior to treatment a topical anaesthic is applied. Dermapen is a quick treatment, therefore if minor discomfort is experienced (prickling sensation), it is for a minimal time frame. Furthermore, the skin therapist performing the procedure can adjust the treatment settings based on patient tolerance.
To aid treatment efficiency and patient tolerance, the face or other area being treated is worked on section-by-section in a systematic manner, while the operator talks the patient through the process, responds to feedback and assesses the skin’s reaction.

Is there any downtime after Dermapen treatments?

In the first 12-48 hours it is expected that you will experience some erythema (redness) and oedema (swelling), much like the appearance and sensation of sunburn. If scarring is being treated, heightened erytherma (redness) and localised superficial bruising may occur.
After 24 hours a mineral makeup can been applied to conceal any residual pinkness. A hydrating moisturiser  Medicalia Post Op is recommended to aid the natural shedding of devitalised skin cells and lessen a ‘dry skin’ sensation that may be felt in the following 5-7 days. This will also assist any skin flaking to appear less apparent and accelerate the shedding process.
To kick-start the healing process and hasten recovery we recommend that patients have a LED – Omnilux phototherapy session immediately after their Dermapen treatment.

Can Dermapen be used in combination with other treatments?

Depending on the condition being treated, your skin theraist may recommend you have a combination of treatments for a synergistic effect. A individual plan is always tailored for each patient and patients should always consult Madison Avenue Hair Skin Wellbeing Clinic if they are planning on having other skin treatments in the weeks before or after their Dermapen treatment. We will strategically space treatments as required.
In general, in the case of aged skin for example, combined treatment may include, a combination Dermapen, as well as home care and maintenance treatments such LED and hydrating facials and peels.

How much does skin needling with Dermapen cost?

The costing is dependent on the number of treatment you have.

We always recommend a LED - Omnilux or CCH mask afterwards to speed the healing process.
